Shade Shifting

Shade Shifting | 2024

Every city has its unique ‘fingerprint’ formed by streets, squares and characteristic architecture in residential areas, shopping centres
and work areas. Due to the rapid growth of the urban environment, the ‘fingerprint’ of the city also changes.

Shadeshifting is an abstract drawing of light, shadow and colour. A representation of the shadow play of an ever-changing city. Shadeshifting contributes to the story of change. This installation reflects the rapid transformation of cities; towers that fill the void, the horizon that reshapes and the shadows that fall over the city.

This work was created in collaboration with Stichting de Vrolijkheid.

In the context of various workshops, young people from the asylum seekers’ centre in Utrecht expressed their vision of the city. Their photography and abstract drawings have been interwoven in 25 panels.

Shadeshifting consists of 25 individually controlled panels which are placed on different carriers in a desired grid. The panels rotate according to a pre-programmed choreography.

Shade Shifting was developed on behalf of I Light U
